Chargers Finish Third at Conference Match

Downey, Calf. - The Cypress College men's golf team finished in third place at its Orange Empire Conference opener on Wednesday at Rio Hondo Golf Course in Downey, Calif.

The Chargers Kyle Pollema earned medalist honors after shooting a one over 73. Saddleback's Brian Boermeester and Orange Coast's Jaime Moreno tied Pollema with 73's as well.

Orange Coast went 7-0 to win the team competition. Santiago Canyon finished 6-1 to take second, and Cypress ended the day with a 5-2 mark to finish in third place. Riverside went 4-3, Cuyamaca 3-4, Palomar 2-4, Saddleback 1-6, and Irvine Valley  0-7.

The Chargers had a good shot to win the event they were hosting but a pair of 83's by the No. 1 and No. 6 players proved the difference in a five-stroke loss, 380-385. The field consisted of eight total schools - Orange Coast (1st Place - 380), Santiago Canyon (2nd - 384), Cypress College (3rd - 385), Riverside C.C. (4th - 388), Cuyamaca (5th - 391), Palomar (6th, 394), Saddleback (7th - 398), Irvine Valley (8th - 404).

For the Chargers, Kevin Kim finished second on the team with a 75, Angel Sotelo shot a 76, Ben Slobodien finished with a 78, and John Beliakoff had an 83. Cypress' No. 1 player Forbes Collins also put up an 83 for the Chargers.

Men's Golf Begins Year Strong

The Cypress College men's golf team is off to a good start this season by finishing tied for third place in its season opening tournament, and another strong finish in its second outing of the year.
