Cypress Finishes Fourth at Twin Oaks

San Marcos, Calif. - Cypress College finished 10 shots behind Orange Coast College to take fourth place with at the Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos, Calif. on Wednesday.

The Pirates combined to shoot a team low 372, Saddleback College finished in second place with a 377 and Palomar ended the day four shots ahead of the Chargers with a 378.

Paul Gomez was the only Cypress Charger to finish in the top 10 on Wednesday, while OCC's Chris Cochran earned medalist honors with a round-low 71.

Chargers Finish One Stroke Behind Pirates

El Cajon, Calif. - Chargers miss winning second straight tournament by a stroke in a 377-378 loss to Orange Coast College at the Oak Glen Golf Club in El Cajon, Calif. on March 12.

Freshman Forbes Collins led the Chargers with a two over 74, followed by teammate Paul Gomez who shot a 75 for the Chargers. OCC's Kyle Frame earned medalist honors with an even par round of 72.

The Pirates landed four players in the top 11 spots to edge Cypress by one shot on the afternoon.

Cypress Golf Pulls into First Place Tie in State Rankings

Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. - Cypress men's golf moved into a tie for first place in the state rankings after an impressive five-stroke victory over Orange Coast College at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita on March 5.

Sophomore Ben Slobodian tied for medalist honors with a team-leading 71 on the day. Paul Gomez ended his day just three shots behind Slobodien with a two over par 74. Kevin Kim and Dennis Waites both shot a five over 77's, while Kyle Pollema ended his day 10 over par with an 82. Angel Sotelo's score didn't factor into the win.

The strong performances by Slobodien and Gomez gave the Chargers two of the lowest three rounds of the day. This year's team looks much improved from last year, and the pundits have taken notice by giving the Chargers a top ranking in the state along with Orange Coast, College of the Desert, and College of the Canyons.

Individually, Cypress has four golfers ranked in the Top 25. Paul Gomez is seventh with a 74 average. Slobodien is a half a shot back in 12th place with a 74.5. Kevin Kim and Dennis Waites are tied in 21st place with a 76, and 77 average. Angel Sotelo's 76 average is good enough for 33rd place in the state rankings, while Kyle Pollema's 77.5 has him in a tie for 39th position. Forbes Collins rounds out the Chargers in the field with a 78.5, 54th place ranking.

Cypress will head down to the Sycuan Golf Course in El Cajon on Monday March 12 to play its next match of the year.
