Ben Slobodien |
Sophomore Ben Slobodian tied for medalist honors with a team-leading 71 on the day. Paul Gomez ended his day just three shots behind Slobodien with a two over par 74. Kevin Kim and Dennis Waites both shot a five over 77's, while Kyle Pollema ended his day 10 over par with an 82. Angel Sotelo's score didn't factor into the win.
The strong performances by Slobodien and Gomez gave the Chargers two of the lowest three rounds of the day. This year's team looks much improved from last year, and the pundits have taken notice by giving the Chargers a top ranking in the state along with Orange Coast, College of the Desert, and College of the Canyons.
Individually, Cypress has four golfers ranked in the Top 25. Paul Gomez is seventh with a 74 average. Slobodien is a half a shot back in 12th place with a 74.5. Kevin Kim and Dennis Waites are tied in 21st place with a 76, and 77 average. Angel Sotelo's 76 average is good enough for 33rd place in the state rankings, while Kyle Pollema's 77.5 has him in a tie for 39th position. Forbes Collins rounds out the Chargers in the field with a 78.5, 54th place ranking.
Cypress will head down to the Sycuan Golf Course in El Cajon on Monday March 12 to play its next match of the year.
